Greece citizenship by descent: who qualifies in 2026

There are two routes. If your Greek parent or grandparent is in a Greek municipal registry (dimotologio), you may already be Greek and only need to be registered. If not, people of Greek origin abroad can apply for naturalization under Article 10 of the Citizenship Code, which also looks at your connection to Greece.

The rules that decide eligibility

  • Recognition: if your ancestor was registered in a Greek municipality and the chain is documented, you can register as a Greek citizen.
  • Article 10 naturalization: you file with the Greek consulate where you live. The Ministry of Interior decides, after the consulate assesses your Greek origin and your connection to Greece.
  • No residence in Greece and no formal language test are required for either route.
  • Name and date inconsistencies between Greek municipal records and US records are the most common source of delays.

What to watch

  • Male applicants should check military service rules before applying; people who live permanently abroad have historically been exempt.
