The rules that decide eligibility
- An ancestor must have been a Hungarian citizen, or there must be good reason to believe your family originates from Hungary.
- You must show sufficient knowledge of Hungarian in an interview. This is the main barrier for most Americans.
- No residence in Hungary is required, and you can apply at any Hungarian consulate.
- If your parent was a Hungarian citizen when you were born, check the separate verification-of-citizenship procedure first.
